Hi, I'm Sharon Balban. At my core, I'm an educator. I spent more than 30 years in the public education system, learning skills, techniques and strategies to help students succeed. I discovered early on that I was passionate about language development in students and focused my training on Reading support through the Dyslexia Reading Center. |
My approach: Supporting your child's discovery of language
I apply a morphophonemic strategy approach to learning the structure of our English language for reading and writing.
I integrate morphology to discover the smallest units of meaning from the very beginning of literacy instruction and unlock rich comprehension. |
What I Offer
Using an integrated approach from Orton-Gillingham and Structured Word Inquiry, I work directly with parents and their child to develop a customized learning program designed to meet their unique needs.
TESTIMONIALS
"It is easier to read, write and spell, now. I think about the word parts, you know, the morphemes. Now, it makes sense!"
Regan, Age 13
"I can see the base word now when I peel off the prefix and the suffix. This makes sense!"
Conner, Age 10
"This helps me spell words better. I think about the word sum. I am a better reader."
Piper, Age 9
"I know what the words mean now. I recognize bases, free bases and bound bases, prefixes and suffixes. If I'm not sure of a new base, I tap out the sounds. Now I am a strong reader. My lexile went up and I am one of the strongest in my class."
Emily, Age 13
"Mrs. Balban has a unique way of making dyslexia tutoring fun and exciting and our daughter looks forward to learning with her. Through Mrs. Balban's tutoring sessions our daughter is acquiring skills necessary to compensate her dyslexia. We would highly recommend Mrs. Balban's services for any child struggling with dyslexia or dysgraphia."

"Kailyn's ELA class was asked to complete a text-dependant analysis regarding theme during class. The teachers wanted to use this as a baseline for what needed to be retaught since returning from the break, so all students received minimal guidance in writing it. After reviewing the essays, there were a few that stood out as exemplary (about 5 out of 40). Kailyn's was one of these. She did a fantastic job on it, and it was really excellent work. Thank you so much for working with her." Beth, Parent
Using your approach with my children helped them investigate the meaning of morphemes in the English language. This investigation leads to more discoveries and knowledge gained. They loved manipulating the parts of words and discovering the meaning of each part. There is no greater joy than seeing my children excited to learn in a way they never have." Kayla, Teacher
